Meet Rocket, the world-changing locomotive which kick started a golden era of innovation. Journey through a great age of experimentation when vicars, lace makers and miners breathed life into hissing, steaming miniature locomotives.

Witness the genesis of rail travel with a face-to-face encounter with Stephenson’s Rocket, back in the museum after 30 years. This bold prototype shaped the course of history with its experimental engineering, captivating the minds of princes and paupers alike. Get up close to this ground-breaking invention and follow 100 years of rapid technological change.

Meet the ordinary people who, fascinated by innovations like Rocket, transformed their kitchens into makeshift workshops and crafted extraordinary machines entirely from scratch. Discover their beautifully intricate homemade creations, including some of the oldest of their kind. Learn how their small-scale experiments pushed the boundaries of engineering, influencing the course of the Industrial Revolution.

The National Railway Museum is open daily 10:00 – 18:00.

Serving a sauropod dinosaur its supper as the VR headset reincarnates the oldest sauropod remains ever found in the UK

York Christmas Festival


15 November to 23 December at various locations

Soak up the city’s medieval charm and scents of spiced mulled wine this season, as fairs, family fun and festival flavours transform York into a festive fairytale.

Festive First Night.  Be the first to visit the St Nicholas Fair on the Festive First Night, when the Christmas festivities officially begin on 15 November. Things will kick off with the official light switch-on, when the bright warm glow of the lights will bring colour to the city and its landmarks.  With the festivities start at 6.30pm, enjoy music and appearances from local personalities whilst getting in the Christmas spirit.

Festive Market.  Don’t miss York’s popular festive market, its back with more Christmassy fun than ever before…  Take a leisurely stroll along St Nicholas Fair and soak up the festive atmosphere, as you discover fine Yorkshire produce from crafters and makers showcased at the Made in Yorkshire Yuletide Village.  Wander inside traditional chalets adorned with twinkling lights and follow the aromas of mulled wine and tempting treats to the new Yorkshire Barn for a taste of yule themed Yorkshire fodder.  If you’re looking for more traditional Christmas gifts, don’t forget to wander amongst the many alpine chalets on Parliament Street.  Sample festive food and drink at the St Sampson’s Square rustic Yorkshire Barn with delicious treats including hot chestnuts and glasses of warming mulled wine. The Judge’s Lodging will once again host the Small Business Christmas Market, where you can buy unique, locally crafted gifts.

Festive Theatrics.  Whether attending a laugh-out-loud panto or listening to the angelic sounds of heart-warming carols at York Minster, theatre and music play a huge part in the Christmas season.  Find a carol service, laugh along at a pantomime or sing along at York’s Annual Community Carol Concert.

From 1 – 23 Dec visit the Coppergate Santa’s grotto brought to you by Stockeld Park.  You and your little ones can come and visit Santa in his beautiful Grotto, meet a real elf, talk to Santa and leave with a wonderful gift and souvenir photo.  Santa’s elves will be opening the doors to his grotto daily from 10am to 6pm, and visitors are warmly invited to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
