Soak up the city’s medieval charm and scents of spiced mulled wine this season, as fairs, family fun and festival flavours transform York into a festive fairytale.
Festive First Night. Be the first to visit the St Nicholas Fair on the Festive First Night, when the Christmas festivities officially begin on 15 November. Things will kick off with the official light switch-on, when the bright warm glow of the lights will bring colour to the city and its landmarks. With the festivities start at 6.30pm, enjoy music and appearances from local personalities whilst getting in the Christmas spirit.
Festive Market. Don’t miss York’s popular festive market, its back with more Christmassy fun than ever before… Take a leisurely stroll along St Nicholas Fair and soak up the festive atmosphere, as you discover fine Yorkshire produce from crafters and makers showcased at the Made in Yorkshire Yuletide Village. Wander inside traditional chalets adorned with twinkling lights and follow the aromas of mulled wine and tempting treats to the new Yorkshire Barn for a taste of yule themed Yorkshire fodder. If you’re looking for more traditional Christmas gifts, don’t forget to wander amongst the many alpine chalets on Parliament Street. Sample festive food and drink at the St Sampson’s Square rustic Yorkshire Barn with delicious treats including hot chestnuts and glasses of warming mulled wine. The Judge’s Lodging will once again host the Small Business Christmas Market, where you can buy unique, locally crafted gifts.
Festive Theatrics. Whether attending a laugh-out-loud panto or listening to the angelic sounds of heart-warming carols at York Minster, theatre and music play a huge part in the Christmas season. Find a carol service, laugh along at a pantomime or sing along at York’s Annual Community Carol Concert.
Head down to Kings Square and experience all the fun of the fair. Don’t miss the opportunity to slide down a good old fashioned Helter Skelter. Don some skates at the Ice Factor.
